The Newspaper House makes use of free discarded newspapers found scattered in and around the urban environment, which artist Sumer Erek builds into an art installation thanks to public participation.
The first House took place in Gillett Square, London in March '08, and Creative City is replicating the success in the Blackie, Liverpool Chinatown to continue the work in progress.
The theme of the project is "the city is our home", encouraging us to think about the city as a dynamic and ever changing environment, in which we ourselves can change by even our smallest action. The aim of the project is to reconnect people to the built environment through their participation in the Newspaper House. Sumer Erek's artwork will be inspired by the people and architecture of Liverpool and China Town; creating a site specific installation which modifies, grows and adapts to each new location and audience.
The experience of participating in the creation of the artwork inspires respect and a sense of ownership from the participants. Sumer Erek's methodology inherently democratises the process of creating art by combining the work of participants with his own aesthetic vision and craftsmanship.
