Stuck on a country road behind an artic' truck
New Slaughterhouse
09.09.2008 - 29.09.2008
Exhibition: An exhibition of works produced by Ebony Andrews over the last five years. Set firmly in the realm of 'The Animal Kingdom', Ebony's recent works take both direct and indirect influences from her own experiences of 'animal'.

Private Viewing  08.09.2008 18.00 - 2100
Artist(s)  Ebony Andrews

As the attitudes of the public and the media continually evolve and re-invent surrounding 'animal' subject matter, Andrews continues to explore new avenues of zoological controversy, invariably unearthing truths about human nature that many would prefer to remain untouched.

Quotes: "Ebony Andrews assembles stuffed animal fragments to create nightmare dramas of distinctly un-cuddly bunnies." - Guardian (Culture Guide) 2006

"Her works are litmus tests of how far we are prepared to tolerate a willed cognitive dissonance: how far can we accept sentient beings as industrial products to be consumed, whilst we treat others as sacrosanct? Through her transformations, Andrews queries the distinction between 'wild', 'domesticated' and agricultural creatures." - Alistair Robinson (Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art)

"Ebony Andrews displays a series of hybrids composed of real animals and consumer objects. Grafted together in an absurd and functionless manner, we are left thinking that the animals which inhabit Andrews' world may have developed the need for consumerism, Or perhaps, our human obsession for the accumulation of artificial objects may have reached such a level that we are unable to distinguish between the natural and the manufactured." - Davy Smith, Reviews Unedited (a-n magazine) 2006

"Andrews gives a thought provoking contemporary update to the grisly business of turning dead animals into decoration." Metro (2008) "When I was seven I asked for a pond for my Birthday so that I could play with frogs. Over the years, the beautifully unique ecosystem that developed in the pond proved to be an inexhaustible source of joy and intrigue for me. It laid the foundation for my interest in animals and natural history. I never had a doll." - Ebony Andrews
